Information sharing has become such an important task, as a computer enthusiast and learner you ought to know them. Well in this article I won't teach you how to copy and paste. But I will teach you how to transfer files through LAN yeah LAN. If you are in a workplace or in colleges, basically you would be working on a LAN connection.
LAN is local area network, PC's are connected through Lan ethernet cables, they are mainly used for internet connection. It has high speed like 10 Mbps or higher connection can give you about 100Mbps.
Why do we need to use LAN for file transfer:
There are many advantages of file transfer through LAN if you were to transfer large files through a flash drive it would take a lot of time. Ethernet cables have speed about 1000Mbps. If you have a lot of files to transfer then this is the best way to go.
How to share files Using LAN
Step 1: Connect both pc with LAN cables, it is also called an ethernet cable, plug the cable in both of the computers.
Step 2:Enable Network Sharing on both the pc.
The first step is to enable Network Sharing. To enable sharing, go to the Control Panel.
Click on the Network and Internet link you see in the window,
At the next page click on the network and sharing center. on the upper-left side of the window click on 'change advanced sharing settings'
ON the next page click on 'All networks' or the drop-down arrow next to the name. Here you will see three networks:- public, private and All network. The public network is for places like Airport and railway station, Private network is workplaces, organization, and home networks. All include both. We shall select and use "All networks".
In the next step, expand the options using the down arrow button, here we need to enable sharing so that other people can share files over the LAN cable. To avoid more configuration and ease of access just 'turn off password protection sharing'.
With this step, other PC's will be able to access the shared data without providing any security credentials, this is not a good security measure, but as you are sharing this with someone you trust them this can be a one-time exception.
Once you're done following the steps, click on Save changes.
Rember that you have to do this on both the PCs:
STEP 3. SETUP A STATIC IP
Now after you have enabled sharing, we need to bring both the PC on the same network so, We will do this by setting a static IP address. Just like the previous step you need to do this on both the PCs.
1. To setup static IP, On Control Panel click on 'Network and Internet' and select Network and sharing center. Depending on the viewing style of the control panel you might see 'network and sharing center' may be on the first window of Control panel.
2. In the next windows, you will see the active connection, which should be an ethernet connection because both of the PC are connected with a LAN cable. Click on the ethernet icon and a new window will appear here select the properties option.
3. In the next window that appears, select 'Internet protocol version4(TCP/IPv4).' Now click on properties again and a new pop-window will open.
4. Here you need to configure the IP settings differently on both the PC's
On the first computer, select the option'Use the following IP addresses', and input the following values:
If you have followed the steps correctly both the computers should appear on the 'Network window' on both computers.
Now, you can click on the other PC's icon and browse the file. But there is still one more step.
STEP 4. SHARE A FOLDER OF FILE.
After you have connected the cable properly and set the options right. Now to send files from one PC to another. For that, you have to share the folder on the LAN. For that make a folder and then copy all the files that you want to share in that folder.
You can create the new folder in your desktop.
Next, select the folder that you want to share and right-click on it. From the menu that appears select, "Give access to" and on the other menu select, "Specific people"
In the next window that appears, click on "Everyone" from the menu, (ignore the shading in the picture). Click on the Add button and finally click on the share button.
Once you have shared it, the next window will show you the network location of that folder. Click on done. That's it, the process is done.
Now what you have to do is go to the other pc and browse the files that were shared from the network, from the network tab on the file explorer, click on the computer name and the files will be visible. Now the process is the same... copy and paste the files as you normally do.
If you want to see the full process in video, here's the video with the instructions, it's from another person.

- Subnet mask: 225.225.225.0
- Default gateway: 192.168.1.2
On the second computer do the same steps but swap the IP address and default gateway values.
- Default gateway: 192.168.1.2
- Subnet mask: 225.225.225.0
- Default gateway: 192.168.1.1
Click on Done/OK
What we are doing in this step is keeping the subnet mask the same and changing the IP address.
Now, Open the windows file explorer, and click on the Network tab on the left-hand side of the window.
If you have followed the steps correctly both the computers should appear on the 'Network window' on both computers.
