A computer is an incredible machine, softwares have made things so easier for us. With every year the software technology is getting updated. So, today lets lay some stress on knowing about the hardware specification of a computer how the hardware processes everything we see.
In the market, you will get computers in various shapes and sizes. The ones people use most are Desktop and Laptops. Computers come in two variant according to me one is Branded and the other is Assembled.
1. Branded: These computers are manufactured by the companies themselves like Apple, Dell, HP, Acer, etc. The hardware configuration is all set by the company. Then thing when buying a computer from the manufacturer is that they design all the components in such a way that they are in sync with each other for maximum productivity. The cost depends it may be less and premium computer do cost much.
2. ASSEMBLED: This is also a popular choice among hardware people and gamers especially. When you are low on a budget this can help, you can build a low budget PC not a LAPTOP, often the disadvantages are that you might not get the optimum performance or it might just cost you more than you imagined.
Either way, both are fine.
IF YOU'RE CONSIDERING BUYING A COMPUTER OR A LAPTOP I WOULD RECOMMEND YOU A BRANDED ONE NOT A ASSEMBLED. UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE PAYING FOR.
This article is meant for a basic intro to basic hardware knowledge of a computer system.
A computer is an electronic machine. All electronic machines work on instructions based on two binary digits 0's and 1's. The computer is no exception to this rule, its hardware functions on this system as well. It not necessary for you to know about every detail but having basic info about the computer can come handy.
💥💥 The HARDWARE structure of a computer system is made of four different essential basic units.
- INPUT UNIT: Input unit refers to all the hardware through which you are able to give inputs to the computer like Mouse, Keyboard, light pen, etc.
- OUTPUT UNIT: Output unit refers to all the hardware devices through which you see information on the screen like you monitor screen or hearing sound like speakers.
- STORAGE UNIT: Storage unit is where you are able to store data like a hard drive(Hard disk) or SSD(Solid-state devices) or flash drives.
- ARITHMETIC LOGIC UNIT: The Arithmetic Logic Unit(ALU) is that part of the computer which takes care of all the arithmetic calculation. Like addition, subtraction and all comparison operations. The ALU is one component of the CPU(central processing unit)
Let's get a list of hardware components of a computer.
1.Motherboard: The motherboard by its name is the most important part of any computer. The motherboard is the central piece through which all the parts of the computer are linked. The motherboard consists of RAM slots, ROM and sound cards slots. CPU slot. literally, every accessory is connected to it.
2. Hard Drive: Hard drive or Hard disk is the storage device of your computer all your videos and games and files are stored on this disk. The hard disk has a read-write head which writes all the data to the disk sectors. They are fast but the new generation computers are using SSD in them.
3. SSD: A solid-state drive (SSD) is a solid-state storage device that uses integrated circuit assemblies as memory to store data persistently, typically using flash memory. It is also sometimes called a solid-state device or a solid-state disk. If you see clearly then you will notice that the size of an SSD is quite smaller than and hard disk. They are less prone to physical shock, run silently and have faster access speeds. SSD store data in semiconductor cells.
4. RAM: RAM (Random access memory). Its is available in all sorts of variants like 4Gb, 8GB, and 16GB. The reason it is called random access is because this memory is accessed all the time for any type of task, if your ram is full, you will not be able to run programs. If you use software then you might have noticed that there are requirements for them some require less RAM some more. RAM is a volatile memory that means once the power goes off the contents are no longer there.
RAM and ROM chips come in four different styles.
1) DIP (Dual In-line Package)
2)DIMM (Dual In-line Memory Module).
3.RIMM (A memory module developed by Rombus).
5. ROM: It stands for READ only memory. That means once the data has been fitted onto it from the manufacturer it is permanent. You cannot alter it and you will never need too. It contains important instructions for the functioning of the computer hardware.
6.CPU: It stands for Central Processing Unit. It is also referred to as the brain of the computer. The CPU is where all the instructions and processing takes place. If you have a faster processor the computations will be faster.
CPUs are available in two choices mainly.
1) INTEL
2) AMD

More about CPU in later articles.
6.GPU: Graphics processing units. A programmable logic chip (processor) specialized for display functions. It renders images, videos, and animations on the screen, having it adds functionality when playing games or using software that requires graphics capability.
7.Optical drives: Optical drives are meant for reading and writing data from CD and DVDs. They are available on laptops and computers. New and modern laptops are avoiding to put these to make their laptops thinner and compact.
Well done! Just a little bit of theory and we are done with the lesson.
All the peripheral devices( any device mouse, keyboard) connected to the motherboard, whether the internal components or the external components make use of controllers for effective communication between them. Controllers are also known as interfaces, ports or adapters.
eg: Hard disks need hard disk controllers, the monitor requires graphics controllers and so on.
a) The main function of the controllers is to convert the data from one form to another. for ex. graphics controllers convert data from the digital format to the analog format for displaying analog display unit.
b) Controllers help in proper functioning of different connected devices by making their speeds to be matched with each other.
c)Isolation of hardware from the software is another function of controllers.
How are different devices connected?
PORT: is a connector on the motherboard or on a separate adapter that allows a device to connect to a computer, these may include keyboard, mouse, serial, parallel, network, sound or video ports.
Hurray! You've made it. This must-have fill your gaps considering computer hardware. Please do share it with your family and friends. If you have anything to ask you can contact me on my email:
