Microsoft Windows is a very famous line up of operating systems. They have shown their presence in the market and their ability to make a stand and provide its users with adequate benefits.
Eight to ten years ago if you didn't know how to use a computer it was not that of a big deal, but in this modern age if you're a student or an employee it's a necessary requirement that you ought to know the necessary skills to operate a computer. If you want to learn and are new to this computer thing you can start by viewing the beginners series of how to use a pc. Here are the links.
- How to use a windows pc, beginners series part 1.
- How to use a windows pc, beginners series part 2.
- How to use a windows pc, beginners series part 3.
Let's learn the basic settings of windows now, knowing the setting is very important if you are pursuing a career ahead in computer or you might be using computers in your job and knowing how to handle small problems and tweaking some settings can come in handy and you just might be able to save some time or help someone in need too. Let's start.
Alert: IN WINDOWS THERE ARE MORE THAN ONE OPTIONS TO REACH THE SAME PLACE. KEEP IN MIND THE ARTICLE IS WINDOWS 10 BASED SO MIGHT FEATURE MIGHT BE LITTLE DIFFERENT IF YOU USE WINDOWS 7 OR 8. DON'T WORRY THE CONCEPT IS ALWAYS SAME.
1. STARTING FROM THE DESKTOP.
Let' start from the desktop. If you just jumped on this article then you would not have any problems understanding the steps, but if it all seems strange to you then pls refer to the beginner's series mentioned above. The desktop is the first view that you see when you power on your PC. If you perform right click then you will see options like this.
Let's dissect this, View option will give you options through which you can arrange the size of your icons on the desktop. Sort by option lets you sort(arrange) the icons according to their size, their name or date modified. Meaning it will alter the way the icons appear in the order of appearance.
Refresh:
The refresh button in windows has been there since windows history, though what's its purpose is a bit technical but in a simple way, it kind' a cleans the junk on the desktop or cleans the memory of the unused programs.
Let's leave the other two for now. Let take a look at the New option, as the name suggests the New option gives you a lot of options to choose from, you can choose to make a new folder or a new type of file.
Alert: Sometimes the menu options in new might change and appear according to the programs installed in your PC like if you have MS Word installed then you might see the option to create a new document.
Next is the display setting, as I mentioned in the beginners series that Microsoft has changed a lot since Windows 7 and 8 release, most of the common features and settings are starting to be available on the setting app.
Now I'm not going to cover all the topics here, I'll do that in a later article. If you see closely, You will see the brightness slider you can change the brightness of your screen that way, There are other options too like Resolution: It defines how the display of your laptop screen might look,(IT IS AUTOMATICALLY ADJUSTED TO THE APPROPRIATE TYPE, PLS DO NOT CHANGE IT, THE RECOMMENDED VALUE IS MOSTLY THE HIGHEST ONE).
Orientation: There are two options, one is LANDSCAPE and PORTRAIT mode. LANDSCAPE mode is the default mode you're seeing the screen right now, the other option will change the screen's viewing angle which you might not like, so, don't change the value. As you can see there are a lot of options to check out, but we will do them later, feel free to check out the options Like SOUND, NOTIFICATIONS, etc.
1. HOW TO CHANGE THE DESKTOP BACKGROUND.
There are many ways to achieve this task, I will show you the easiest one. So, first, find the image that you would want to be your background. You can download the image too. After you have found the image. Right click on the image. You will get a traditional menu option, select 'set as desktop background' and the result is like this. Your background might appear full screen, mine is customized to size 'fit'.
Let's analyse another major part of the desktop. that is the notification bar. If you look at the image above then you might see it at the lower left, the last option right to the time option. Each time you receive a notification from an app or windows feature then you will see your notification there. Depending upon your unseen notification you will a number like 2,3,5. Let's analyze it.
After you click on the notification icon. YOU will see a number of options, depending upon your version of windows your options might differ, if you have an old version of win 10 then all of these features might not be available to you.
1. Network: The is the part where you can connect with the wireless networks(WI-FI) available to your pc.You will see your connected network if you use a dial-up connection or an ethernet connection
If you look closely at the picture in the highlighted box then you will see three options.
1 AndriodAP: this is the connection(wireless network) I am connected to if your connection is something like "Love U", then you might see it displayed on the option.
2.Airplane Mode: If you use a smartphone then you might be familiar with this option. This option will disable all Wireless communication on your pc. In this mode, you will not be able to use wifi and Bluetooth features.
3. Hotspot: You might be familiar with this option too. In earlier versions of Microsoft Windows, this feature was not installed and people had to use different methods for this feature. But with the new release on Windows 10, this feature is available. This feature creates a new wifi network based on the current network you are connected to and you will be able to share your internet connection with your friends.
There is another option Network and Internet settings but we will cover it at another time, you can go and see its contents.
2. Night light:
A feature that's supposed to be easier on the eyes and help you fall asleep after a long night of web surfing. It's called Night Light, and the feature restricts blue light emanating from your display by changing its hue.
3.Brightness adjuster: when you press the button it will increase the brightness and after reaching 100 %, if you press it again it will start back from 0%.
2. How to pin programs to the taskbar.
If you use a particular application a lot and want to keep it handy well you can pin it to the taskbar. All you have to do is open the application(software) right click on the software icon of the taskbar and select "pin to taskbar'. Or you can simply drag the software icon from desktop to the taskbar, it will be automatically pinned.
If you want to unpin a software then simply right click on the software icon on the taskbar eg like chrome in the above picture and select 'Unpin from taskbar"
In the previous article we learnt how to install the software in this article we will learn:
How to uninstall software?
Uninstalling a software means it will no longer be available for usage. You might uninstall it because you no longer need it or because you do not have enough space in your PC.There are ways to uninstall a software but I will teach you the basic one through the control panel:
1. open Control panel: Type 'Control panel' in the search bar. and open it.
2. Then after the window opens choose 'Programs and features' and if your view does not match mine then click on the option 'view by' on the upper-right corner of the screen and select 'large icons'.
3. Select the software that you want to uninstall and click on uninstall/change or right-click and select uninstall.
4. The software window will open. you might be getting a confirmation window from Windows security asking you for permission then click accept. From here the steps ahead are different for different software. Mostly they have some concept. You will get a screen showing you options and you have to choose 'uninstall' and the software will automatically be uninstalled.
click next and then you will get a screen confirming that the software has been uninstalled.
