The settings app is a powerful tool embedded in Microsoft Windows. It started when Microsoft first announced Windows 8. When Windows 10 was released they decided to make further improvements in it, as of the latest update, the settings app is full with rich features for us to explore. So, let us start.

Today we are going to discuss the following topics:
  1. System.
  2. Personalization.
  3. Updates
Note: This is a Basic introduction to the setting app, I won't be covering some in-depth or Advanced topics in it.

To open setting you can click on the start button and near the lower left side, above the power button you will see a setting icon click on it Or you can search the settings app by searching it on the search bar.

Now there are some basic instructions that you will have to remember, first is that the structure of the settings app is same throughout, i,e, if you were on devices or Personalization the structure or the viewing style, would just be same. If you see the picture clearly then you will see a search bar called 'find a setting' - there you can type a setting or an option that you might be trying to search.

On the left I have highlighted a box for you, you will see that this viewing style is just similar everywhere on the settings app.

I have explained display settings in the previous article. So, pls view the article to know more about it.

How to use basic settings of windows.

To explain basic settings I will generally do with written instruction ok,

In the Sound options on the left, you will see your output device options. Generally, you will have only one, but if your PC has more than one software installed for Sound then you might get two. Do not change the default settings unless you are fimiliar with them and you know how to change them.  Drop down you will get the sound controller and you input audio device option(Microphone). You might have more than one option so pls don't change it if your microphone doesn't seem to be working then you can change and see if it is working or not.

Notifications and actions: This is the settings page of the notifications bar, here you can control which applications and software can show notifications on your desktop.

If you see in the picture I have highlighted the option 'Add or remove quick action' this is the option through which you can change, add or remove features.  As you scroll down you will see some option.

Let's talk about three settings ok for now.
1. Show notifications on the lock screen.: This means when you sign out of your pc or when you lock your computer and view your screen you will see the notifications on the lock screen.

2. Get, tips and tricks, and suggestions as you see Windows.: When you use windows you will get tips to use windows and its features.

3. Get notifications from apps and other services: This is an interesting setting so, what this means is that if you have apps and softwares that can show notifications then this setting will let you decide if you want to see these notifications or not.

Below you will see a list of apps that can show notifications on your PC if you want to stop those notifications the simply off them.

POWER AND SLEEP SETTINGS:

This is a less important setting but you ought to know this. The setting has two parts SCREEN and SLEEP. Both of the options show different behaviour when they are being used on battery power or when you are using them when your charger is plugged in. The screen option turns your screen off when your PC has not been used for some while. You can choose the time limit as to when your PC shuts the screen off.
The other option tells us when your PC will go to sleep after a particular period of inactivity.
Sleep: Sleep is a state in which your computer shuts down all process so as to conserve maximum power when you are not using it. You can turn it on by pressing the power button or mostly pressing any key on the keyboard.

So, select the appropriate time for yourself or leave it at its default values.
The last option in the list is 'ABOUT' option, this option will tell you about the basic features of your PC.

These are the basic functions that you must know there are other options left but we'll learn them at a later date.

2. PERSONALIZATION:

Navigating the setting app in windows 10

If you select Personalization from the settings app then you will land in a page something like this. The personalization settings lets you change the way you see windows. It deals with a lot of changes like background, lock screen, themes etc. Let' s discuss them.

Background: In the previous article I have told you that you can achieve the same result with many different methods. If you see at the picture(Or It will be better if you also open your pc and start doing the steps as you go along) then you will see a background image and an option called Background which offers you with options like Picture, solid color or slideshow.

The picture is the default value if you have a picture background, If you choose a solid color, then you will have to choose any color for eg. black, blue, red anything you want and then color becomes your background. If you chose slideshow then you will get a slideshow background where pictures will change after a fixed interval of time. You can set the time.

Next option is to choose a fit in this option you choose how your background looks on the desktop If you click on it you will get options like fill, centre, fit, etc. The meanings are the same as their names suggest.
You can select the different options and see how the picture looks on the desktop.

Colors:

Navigating the setting app in windows 10

In the colors menu, you will see different options but they are relatively simple to understand and handle.

You will get a range of colors down the page, you can select any color that you like. What happens when I choose a color? When you choose a color then the taskbar changes the color accordingly and this color will be reflected in the notifications bar and the start menu. Let's check the other options.
Under the 'more options' category.

You have Transparency effects, it adds transparency to the taskbar and start menu another option is 'show accent colors on the following surfaces'. Under this you have action centre (notifications bar) start menu and taskbar and the other one is the title bar. so the first option is mostly clicked if you want to add color to the title bar you can check the box too.
The other option is a pretty good one, It will change your desktop experience most of the menu will be appearing dark. In a simple way, you will enter into dark mode. If you look carefully in the picture I have selected Light mode.

LOCK SCREEN:
On this page, you will see you lock screen details such as which background you want your lock screen to have. You can choose your own pictures or leave at its default value. Another setting that you might see is you can choose which apps can show notification on the lock screen. You can select more apps or change them if you want too.

THEMES:
A theme is a collection of pictures, sounds and colors. There are many themes you can choose from.
As Windows 10 is growing the developers at Microsoft decided that they would shift the theme downloads from their website to Windows Store. So, if you want more themes then you can select 'Get more themes from Store' link on the upper corner in the window.

There are some tips and tricks but let's keep them for another day.

There are other settings there for exploration, but I think its best not to mess with those settings, it won't do much harm but its best to leave them just as they are you can check them out if you want too.

3.UPDATES.
This is a very important section of windows, let's know this a little better.
Windows update is Microsoft's core feature for any feature of windows. Updates are what makes your windows secure against threats and viruses, without it you pc would be vulnerable to threats(well most of them!). Windows updates now with its latest features also updates your software on your PC giving you smooth working experience. But the hack in Windows 10 is that you don't have the choice not to install updates, i.e when the updates are available you'll have to update.
Well, there's a way around it too. But we'll do that later.

WINDOWS Security: Windows Defender is Microsoft Windows own antivirus, in Windows 10 they are really providing good virus definitions. Defender helps to protect your pc against harmful software and viruses. we'll not be going into more details of Windows Defender for now.

There are a lot of options left to explore but we'll do them bit by bit in the future articles.
I'm glad that you read through the article, I want to thank you all for helping me to grow and learn in this process. Much more to come so stay tuned.

THANK YOU!
