VMware is a virtualization and cloud computing software provider. VMware is leading in the virtualization technology, it is an excellent piece of technology allowing you to run all kinds of different operating systems on a single host computer.
VMware is a good technology that enables you to use multiple operating systems(OS) on your computer. There might be many reasons as to why you should use virtualization. If you are an app developer and want to develop an app for a certain OS then you might want to test its efficiency or you just might want to try a different operating system to see how it works. Either way, it is very efficient to use.
VMware products.
VMware has deployed many products in the markets for its users, all of which are successful, here is a list of them:
- Vmware Desktop Application
- Vmware WorkStation
- Vmware Fusion
- Vmware Player
- Vmware Server Application
- Vmware ESX Server
- Vmware ESXi Server
- Vmware Server
- ThinAPP - Application Virtualization
- VCloud Air - Public Cloud
- Vsan - Storage Virtualization
- NSX - Network Virtualization
- VCloud Director
- VRA - private Cloud
- Vsphere - Server Virtualization
- Horizon View - Desktop Virtualization
Before we can talk about using VMware, let us know what virtualization is?
As you might have a hard drive, you might have seen in your computer that you have more than more partitions in your computer( the C, D: drives on my computer), they are called logical partitions it is a logical division of a hard disk drive to create, in effect, two separate hard drives.
In computer terms, virtualization means creating a virtual version of a device or a resource, such as a server, storage device, network or even an operating system.
Key operations of a Virtual Machine(the virtualized device created is called a virtual machine).
Partitioning
- Run multiple operating systems in a single machine.
- Divide system resources between virtual machines.
Isolation
- Providing fault and security isolation at the hardware level.
- Preserve performance with advanced resource controls.
Encapsulation
- Save the entire state of a virtual machine to a file.
- Move and copy virtual machines as copying a file.
Hardware independence
- Provision or migrate any virtual machine to any physical server.
Now that we know what VMware does, let's build our own virtual machine. First of all, you need to go to Vmware official site to download the software, you can use VMware player because it's free. Click Here.
After you have finished downloading, install it.
Note: It is very important for the installation to proceed is that you need to have virtualization enabled, well it mostly is, but if it isn't then you will have to manually enable it. If you do not have virtualization in your device then you will not be able to run VM's in it. YOU can go for virtual box then.
After the installation is finished. open the VMware player.
Then you need to go to the player option-click on it on the upper-left corner. Click on File and then New Virtual Machine.
Then on the next screen, you might notice a dialog box, which will give you three options, as to how you are going to select the installation file of your OS.
1. If you have the installer disc.
2. If you have the iso files of the installer disc.
3. I will install the OS later: This option lets you create the virtual machine first and then install the OS.
I am going with the Second. Because I have the installation files. You can choose anyone.
Then you need to click on browse and select the location of the ISO disk image of the OS you are going to install it can be windows or Linux. I have chosen to install Windows 8. Then click on next.
The easy install will detect the Operating system and then it will ask you to fill the details in, It is not necessary to give any info here but you can still mention them, you won't have to fill them later on. Click on Next.
On the next screen choose the name of the VM(Virtual Machine) and the location of the virtual machine. You can change the location if you want to, but it is recommended if you keep the default one, unless you are running out of space.
In the next screen choose the amount of disk space you want to allocate to your OS. 32-40GB should be enough. You can choose more if you like. You can choose either of the two options as a single of multiple files it works in both cases.
On the next screen, you will see the complete configuration of the virtual machine. If you would like to increase the ram allocation to the VM then you can click on Customize Hardware and on the next screen go to Memory on the left corner of the dialog box and then use the slider to confirm the amount of memory you want to allocate to it and then click Close.
Now click on Finish. Your VM(Virtual Machine) is created and it will power on.
Well, the installations is going by Easy Install so it will autofill some information by itself after the installation finishes you will have a completely new OS working for you on your device.
Note: The VM runs on the host computer( The PC on which you run the VM is called the host), and the VM is called the Guest PC or VM.
In the next article, I will show how you can install the VMware tools to increase the efficiency of your VM.
Thanks for going through the article, I hope your VM is installed if you have any problems do comment down, if you have any queries then you can mail me at phoenixblogs99@gmail.com.
