An operating system is system software that manages the hardware and all other software on your computer. Operating system (OS) is a fimiliar term used to represent it.
What is an Operating System(OS)?
As our world is advancing and technology is becoming an essential part of our lives, we should be aware of common technologies. One such breakthrough was the development of Operating Systems. When the computer was first developed it was a very complex machine, only people with the right knowledge could access it. If it was supposed to reach millions of people then the computer had to be simple in terms of usage. So operating systems were developed so that they could bridge in the gap. As time passed by operating systems became simpler to use. Many companies have developed their own operating systems. An operating system is also software. It keeps all the software on your computer functioning, The operating system is basically the software that provides standard access to the user. It controls and interacts with the hardware and Input/Output devices. For a beginner, this definition will work for you.
The software that operating systems use to communicate with the hardware is called a driver. A common task like printing is done like this: The user gives the command to print the page, the operating receive the command and send proper instructions to the printer with the help of printer drivers to send proper signals. It doesn't matter which printer you print form or how it happens, the OS handles all of the details.

What devices does OS(Operating Systems) handle?
You might think laptops and desktops are the only devices controlled by OS but in fact, a lot of machines you see around your are controlled by operating systems. The ATM's you use are computer software that runs on operating. Devices like your android phone, iPhone, gaming console, smart watches, Wireless devices, etc are all run based on operating systems.
NOTE: ATM software mostly run on Windows systems they are just another software, don't tell anybody.
A normal person doesn't have to know everything about Operating Systems, knowing the basics will help you. You should know what operating system you are using what type of architecture you have.
More about architure in subsiquent articls.
Let's see the different operating systems. For now, we will see the three main OS's.
1. Microsoft Windows: Well where to start then Windows my personal favourite. Microsoft Windows is a line of operating systems developed by Microsoft, their simple and elegant design has made them widely used and accepted. Since its original release until today Microsoft has excelled and made today's future possible for us. It's hard to imagine a world without Microsoft.

2. Mac OS: Here comes Apple, it is one of the best operating system available. The reason I did not mention it on no.1 position is I never got to use it. Well, hope someday we'll own one, macOS is a series of graphical operating systems developed by Apple since 1984 when it was introduced in the Macintosh series. Today Apple it is one of the most successful companies in the world and will remain successful. Mac users view Apple as a source of inspiration all thanks to Steve Jobs and the people who made it possible.
3. LINUX :
Linux is a very popular operating largely used by developers and industries, it's open source availability was a game changer in the computer world. It is used in servers and super-computers, it very popular among the hacker community. It is a family of Unix like operating systems based on the Linux kernel. It was first developed by Linus Torvalds on September 17, 1991.
Linux is one of the most prominent examples of free and open-source software collaboration. The source code may be used, modified and distributed—commercially or non-commercially—by anyone under the terms of its respective licenses, such as the GNU General Public License.
